Wick High School : Intermediate 2 Provided by:The North Highland College
This is a new course, available from 2008, designed to allow students to learn about energy issues and gain basic skills for moving on to training or employment in the energy sector. Students will become familiar with the terms used in the energy sector, explore links with the environment and develop practical skills by constructing small scale models that produce energy. Employability skills will be developed and tested.
Students will work on the construction of a small scale set-up to harness solar energy and use it to heat a supply of hot water. This is one of the practical parts of the course.
Students will work on the construction of a small scale set-up to harness wind energy to produce electricity. This is also one of the practical parts of the course.
This will give students an overview of where we get our energy supplies from and how energy is converted from one type to another, and will include traditional and renewable sources and energy conservation.
Students will investigate how much energy individuals use in a year and how this can be used to calculate “carbon footprints”.
Students will study how oil and gas fields were formed and the types of rigs used to get at this energy source. A more detailed look will be taken at methods of extraction, including drilling and mud and fluid control systems.
Students will investigate traditional ways of producing electricity and how this is distributed around the country using the national grid.
These are usually National Certificate (NC) courses as a full-time college student. They give students knowledge and skills training which will be certificated with the SQA. They can lead on to HNC, HND and degree courses.
