The Early Education and Childcare course at Intermediate 2 builds on the Intermediate 1 course and prepares the student for working in that sector. The employability skills are worked into each unit. Although some units are optional, the college may make this decision on what is most appropriate.
All work is assessed to national standards, and this takes place as the course progresses. Work experience can be a useful part of the course, and visits to local nurseries, playgroups and schools along with visiting speakers do enrich the course delivery.
This traces the key stages from infant to adolescent.
The work in this unit covers the importance of play in a child's development.
This unit covers the knowledge about legal requirements through to some of the professional skills of the workplace.
Students spend time on the food requirements of babies, young children through to adolescence, and how this nutrition contributes to the child's development.
Students learn about basic First Aid procedures and how these relate to health and safety issues.
Deals with the responsibilities of being a parent, and how children develop and how parents are supported in various ways.
These are usually National Certificate (NC) courses as a full-time college student. They give students knowledge and skills training which will be certificated with the SQA. They can lead on to HNC, HND and degree courses.
Students finishing the Hospitality Intermediate 1 course might naturally wish to progress onto the Intermediate 2 course. For younger students this might be done in later school years, or for the older ones it may be done through a local college. To find your local college please click here.
You may be able to get an employer to take you on with your Intermediate 1 or 2 certificate, with the offer of on the job training or a modern apprenticeship. You need to be quite clear what is on offer before accepting such a post. In the construction trades you should use the CITB or SECTT pathways.
