Ullapool High School is situated in the village of Ullapool, at the seaward end of Lochbroom in Wester Ross. It provides six year comprehensive secondary education to pupils within the delineated catchment area who come from as far to the north-west as Lochinver and Drumbeg in Sutherland, with a daily round trip of over sixty miles, and as far south as Dundonnell. The associated primary schools within the catchment area are: Achiltibuie, Badcaul, Lochinver, Scoraig, Stoer, and Ullapool.
The school has approximately 250 pupils, the equivalent of twenty seven full time subject teaching staff and an extensive Support For Learning Department.
Ullapool Public School was established in 1872 following the Education Scotland Act of 1872. The original site of the school was in the neighbourhood of the area now occupied by the village hall and was classified as a senior school with a junior section.
In 1929 the school moved to Quay Street and was firmly established as a senior secondary school with an attached primary department.
In 1954, the school was downgraded to junior secondary status with pupils transferring to Dingwall Academy. In 1979 Ullapool High School became a four year secondary school, and in 1985 the school attained six year status.
In 1991 a headteacher was appointed to the primary department and two distinct schools were created.
In October 1999 the school moved to its own purpose built campus which it is very pleased to share with the community. Ullapool High School is now eight years old and offers pupils access to all the latest technology, both within the school and also in the very popular community wing, which incorporates the Macphail Centre, the excellent public library and a two hundred seat theatre.
The school welcomes adults as learners into S5 and S6 classes, where spaces exist and the distance learning provision of the Macphail Centre is increasing.
