Tain Royal Academy : Intermediate 1 Provided by:The North Highland College
The Early Education and Childcare course at Intermediate 1 lets the student gain basic knowledge and Skills for working in that sector. The employability skills are included in each unit.
All work is assessed throughout the course and successful candidates will receive a certificate from the SQA.. Work experience can be a useful part of the course, and visits to local nurseries, playgroups and schools along with visiting speakers enrich the course delivery.
This traces the key stages from infant to adolescent.
The work in this unit covers the importance of play in a child's development.
This unit covers the knowledge about legal requirements through to some of the professional skills of the workplace.
Students spend time on some of the basic skills and procedures for looking after children e.g. bathing; preparing food.
Students learn about the appropriate health and safety issues and the risks and hazards to children and those working with them.
Deals with the responsibilities of being a parent, and how children develop and how parents are supported in various ways.
School pupils may be offered a chance to go on to study early education and childcare at Intermediate 2 through a school/college or school/workplace partnership. The depth of study will be greater in the Intermediate 2 course with tougher targets to achieve.
These are usually National Certificate (NC) courses as a full-time college student. They give students knowledge and skills training which will be certificated with the SQA. They can lead on to HNC, HND and degree courses.
SVQs are workplace based training opportunities assessed by your local college. For instance you might work in a play group or nursery and be assessed for SVQ level 2 or 3 in early education and childcare.
