Stromness Academy is a secondary school  serving all of the West Mainland. Associated primary schools are Dounby, Evie, Firth, Stenness and Stromness Primary School.  Pupils also come from Rousay and Orphir.

At present the school has approximately 440 pupils which means that the school is large enough to provide all of the main academic subjects, but small enough to be friendly and welcoming. The school benefits from its designation as a community school, and provides extensive sporting and social facilities for use by members of the community.

Stromness Academy is fully comprehensive and classes comprise of pupils with differing abilities. The aim of the school is to facilitate intellectual, personal, and social development of pupils through provision of an appropriate curriculum, varied teaching methods, motivating assessment policy, and a supportive guidance system. An emphasis is placed on harmonious relationships based on mutual consideration and respect, and on the creation of an atmosphere in which pupils feel secure and equally valued.
