Hospitality at Intermediate 1 gives an introduction to working in the hospitality industry. Students will learn about planning and stock control, cooking, waiting on tables and organising events. All students spend time looking at the employability skills needed for working in the hospitality industry including self evaluation and setting targets for personal improvement.
All work is assessed to national standards and this takes place as the course progresses. All students will operate in a real catering and hospitality environment. Contact with other establishments and visiting speakers may be included to widen the course.
Students will look at the range of catering events. They will be involved in planning a meal for an occasion, preparing the meal and producing it with support.
Students will learn about welcoming customers, taking orders, serving, clearing tables and taking payment.
Students will learn about the roles, responsibilities and career opportunities of people working in the hospitality industry. They will look at the employability skills required in the industry. Students will review their own skills and set targets for improvement.
Students will learn about basic food hygiene, health and safety issues, equipment, terminology (words chefs use), safe knife handling, stock control, preparing, cooking, and presenting a range of foods.
There are no optional units for this course
On completion of your course, you would be perfectly placed to seek employment within the hospitality industry, or work based training.
On completion of your course you might want to learn more about the hospitality industry at your local college, gaining more useful experience and qualifications.
SVQs are workplace based training opportunities assessed by your local college. For instance you might work in a play group or nursery and be assessed for SVQ level 2 or 3 in early education and childcare. Students finishing the Hospitality Intermediate 1 course might naturally wish to progress onto the Intermediate 2 course. For younger students this might be done in later school years, or for the older ones it may be done through a local college. To find your local college please click here.
