Islay High School is a non denominational six year comprehensive modern and vibrant school catering for an age range of eleven to eighteen years. The school has thirteen classrooms, fourteen practical rooms, a games hall, gymnasium and and an assembly hall. The catchment area covers the island's of Islay and Jura with a school roll of 267 pupils.
It is possible that the original Bowmore School was built in the 1770s and the earliest records show that French, Gaelic, Latin and Greek were taught. The three headmasters after whom the houses were named were David MacBean, John Bryce and John Winnard and they directed the schools fortunes from 1867 to 1948 during which time the gradual growth of the school was recorded. In 1885 we find the Head Teacher and two teachers coping with 184 pupils; in 1939 the head master and nineteen teachers had 300 pupils.
