Campbeltown Grammar School was founded in 1686. Since June 1969 it has occupied new buildings on a site at Limecraigs overlooking the town. It is a non-denominational co-educational secondary comprehensive school, taking all children between the ages of twelve and eighteen from the south Kintyre area (as far as Tayinloan on the west side and Carradale on the east) and from the island of Gigha. The designated catchment area contains nine associated primary schools. The school had a roll of over five hundred pupils and more than fifty teaching staff
It is very much a community school, acting as a focus for many of the area’s cultural, social and sporting activities and providing logistical and material support for many community activities. The Concert Wind Band has held the British Championship twice and the Kintyre Schools Pipe Band, based in the school, currently holds the Cowal, Scottish, British, European and World championship at novice juvenile grade.
A wide range of extra-curricular activities is offered, from drama, art, guitar and board games, through choirs, cookery and homework clubs to the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. A wide range of sports is available, including sailing and canoeing along with the more traditional soccer, volleyball, badminton, cricket and shinty. There is an annual exchange with an American high school, and regular foreign trips as well as excursions within Scotland.
