Alness Academy

Dalmore
Alness
Ross-Shire
IV17 0UY

Alness Academy is a six year comprehensive school serving the small town of Alness, the villages of Evanton and Ardross and the surrounding rural area. Along with five associated primary schools - Ardross, Bridgend, Coulhill, Kiltearn and Obsdale - Alness Academy was involved in one of the two New Community Schools projects in the Highland Council area and has over 500 pupils with fifty four teaching staff.

The school is very well resourced in terms of accommodation, which includes a multi-purpose concourse, a hundred seat lecture theatre and a moderate sized library. The school is also well resourced in terms of information technology and all the departments have their own computing facilities. The school has its own playing fields and PE complex including a twenty five metre swimming pool.

Alness Academy is very proud of its caring attitude and its reputation within the community. There is a pupil support team at present comprising of nine teachers and eleven auxiliary staff and this includes learning support, support for special educational needs, and one behaviour support teacher. This integrated support team works very closely with the Guidance Department, the Children's Services Worker, youth workers, and other agencies. There is a full extra-curricular life within the school involving sports, music, and drama. The school has several links with European countries including a long standing partnership with a school in Austria.

Parents are always welcome at Alness Academy and more formal contact with parents is established through parents evenings. There is involvement with the local community through a number of avenues. The school is well served by an active and supportive parent council.

Alness Academy was one of the earliest schools in Scotland to be recognised as Investors In People and in July 2003 received Scotland's Health At Work Bronze award. Pupils are encouraged to play a role in the wider community and this was recognised in August 2003 by the school receiving the Princess Diana Silver Award for encouraging citizenship.
