The Engineering Skills course allows students to gain an insight into skills across a range of engineering types, as well as the employability skills, including health and safety, which are built into each unit. The course is workshop based. There are four units that all students study.
All work is assessed to national standards, and this takes place as the course progresses. All students will operate in a practical environment in the workshop. Work experience is not part of the course, but visits to local firms and visiting speakers do enrich the course delivery. Engineering Skills is currently only offered at Intermediate 1 level. However, a new Intermediate 2 level course is being introduced from 2008.
Students will learn to use the correct tools and components to set up and use a low voltage circuit.
Students will make an object using basic skills including bolting, riveting, screwing, soldering, welding and the use of adhesives.
Students will bring together the skills from earlier parts of the course to make an object to meet certain design information.
Students will learn to use basic tools and develop the skills of measuring, marking, cutting, shaping, drilling and tapping.
There are no optional units for this course
Students who are successful in the Intermediate 1 course may consider proceeding to the more demanding Intermediate 2 level. This becomes available from 2008 in certain colleges.
SVQs are workplace based training opportunities assessed by your local college. For instance you might work in a play group or nursery and be assessed for SVQ level 2 or 3 in early education and childcare. You may be able to get an employer to take you on with your Intermediate 1 or 2 certificate, with the offer of on the job training or a modern apprenticeship. You need to be quite clear what is on offer before accepting such a post. In the construction trades you should use the CITB or SECTT pathways.
These are usually National Certificate (NC) courses as a full-time college student. They give students knowledge and skills training which will be certificated with the SQA. They can lead on to HNC, HND and degree courses.
