Headlines Hairstylists is a well established and busy salon in the town of Wick with a wide range of local clients. The salon provides all aspects of hairstyling including the services of its own beautician. This allows it to cater for weddings and other special events by offering a complete package of services.
Headlines recruit locally by advertisement in the local press and trainees are expected to attend further courses at North Highland College to increase their professional competence and knowledge.
Mrs Simpson sees considerable value in the Skills for Work courses for school pupils interested in taking up hairdressing as a career. She thinks it very important that pupils work in a real salon environment so that they see the complete range of tasks that hairdressers undertake, from sweeping the floor and cleaning the sinks to cutting, colouring and styling. She considers that learning customer care skills are very important for the students on these courses.
Headlines salon is used by North Highland College on a Monday to run the hairdressing courses for Wick high School link pupils. Mrs Simpson sees this early introduction to hairdressing as a way of ensuring that only those who really are committed, interested and willing to learn decide to go on to take up the profession as a career.
