The North Highland College : Higher
This course is designed to introduce students to working in the Health and Social Care jobs sector. The course is set and assessed at Higher Grade level and all those applying should have good reading, writing, research and study skills. Before applying for this course students should be fairly certain that this is the type of course they are interested in. The relevant employability skills are of high importance as are the health and safety and protection issues.
The course will be assessed by means of case studies and investigations. Students should be aware that these will require quite a lot of writing/word processing as well as the ability to work to published deadlines and hand-in dates.
Students will research National Care Standards and learn how to assess a client’s needs in order to prepare a suitable care plan.
Students will study the health issues, the safety issues and the protection issues that arise from working in this sector. Students will investigate the issues, including interviewing workers and visiting care establishments.
Students will learn how people develop physically, emotionally, intellectually, socially and culturally as they go through life and how this is applied in the health and social care settings. They will learn about stress models and how to support clients to reduce stress.
Students will find out about the skills and attitudes needed to work in this sector by a work placement or by realistic simulations and class exercises. Students will learn about service provision, review and set their own targets for future training and employment.
There are no optional units for this course
These are usually National Certificate (NC) courses as a full-time college student. They give students knowledge and skills training which will be certificated with the SQA. They can lead on to HNC, HND and degree courses.
You may be able to get an employer to take you on with your Intermediate 1 or 2 certificate, with the offer of on the job training or a modern apprenticeship. You need to be quite clear what is on offer before accepting such a post. In the construction trades you should use the CITB or SECTT pathways.
