Lochaber College : Intermediate 2

This course provides a wide-ranging introduction to hairdressing, with lots of the learning being done by hands-on experience. Students will learn about general salon duties, reception skills and customer care. These employability skills feature as a separate unit of the course.  Students will learn some of the skills in shampooing, conditioning, scalp massage, hair drying with some colouring and cutting. Assessment will be on-going based mainly around the practical work the student does.  Students will also compile a folio of their work throughout the course.  The course takes place in a salon environment, but does not require a work experience placement. Visits to other salons or talks from visiting speakers can add to the value of the course.

The course units have employability skills built into them.

SVQ

SVQs are workplace based training opportunities assessed by your local college. For instance you might work in a play group or nursery and be assessed for SVQ level 2 or 3 in early education and childcare. To find your local college please click here, or discover more about what SVQs are in the glossary.

Employment with training

You may be able to get an employer to take you on with your Intermediate 1 or 2 certificate, with the offer of on the job training or  a modern apprenticeship.   You need to be quite clear what is on offer before accepting such a post.  In the construction trades you should use the CITB or SECTT pathways.

Further Education at college

These are usually National Certificate (NC) courses as a full-time college student.   They give students knowledge and skills training which will be certificated with the SQA.   They can lead on to HNC, HND and degree courses.
