Argyll College : Intermediate 1
This course is sometimes run by a college or by a school supported by a sport or recreation provider. Students have to study in a real work environment, dealing with day to day procedures, safety, and contacts with the public.
The course is based on the student having a support role in the provision of activities including first aid and emergency procedures. Students will be expected to improve their own personal fitness and learn how to draw up fitness and improvement development plans.
There is a strong emphasis on employability skills. There are three units and two half-units in the course.
Students will assist with the planning, preparation and delivery of an activity. All relevant guidelines and health and safety procedures have to be met. Students will take part in reviewing the activities with participants and be able to suggest next stages.
Students will learn to deal with accidents and emergencies relevant to the activities. They will learn to complete accident and incident report forms.
Students will set up and take down equipment, following relevant guidelines. They will check equipment for faults, and know what action to take. They will work in a tidy manner, know about protective equipment and be aware of following all health and safety requirements.
Students will learn how to find out their own base-line fitness and then go on to plan an appropriate training plan to meet agreed fitness goals. They will then review this plan, identify good and bad points, and amend their plan accordingly.
Students learn to communicate with customers and colleagues in a positive, appropriate and clear manner. They will self assess and review their progress, setting targets for improvement as appropriate.
There are no optional units for this course
Some schools will be able to offer older students the chance to move on to the Intermediate 2 level of this Skill for Work course. The course is more demanding and requires students to show a very deep commitment and to work quite independently.
You may be able to get an employer to take you on with your Intermediate 1 or 2 certificate, with the offer of on the job training or a modern apprenticeship. You need to be quite clear what is on offer before accepting such a post. In the construction trades you should use the CITB or SECTT pathways.
These are usually National Certificate (NC) courses as a full-time college student. They give students knowledge and skills training which will be certificated with the SQA. They can lead on to HNC, HND and degree courses.
