Intermediate 1

This course lets young people find out about the uniformed services (army, merchant navy, Royal Air Force, Royal Marines, Royal Navy), as well as the civilian services (ambulance service, coastguard, fire brigade, police).

Students will discover how these different organisations operate and what their functions are. A lot of the course will deal with employability skills including team work and physical fitness. Students will spend time on assessing their own fitness and in team building exercises.

Engaging with the Community

Students will explore such issues as stereotyping and diversity. They will look at the management of confrontational situations. Students will explore a local issue, including interviewing a member of the community about it.

Health, Safety, Fitness and Well Being

Students will carry out tasks which will show the importance of health and fitness in these services.  They will learn to carry out risk assessments. In some activities students will have an opportunity to deal with unexpected situations.

Introduction to these Services

This is the employability skills unit  in which students will find out about the skills that those employed in these services need to have. They will explore the many and varied career opportunities available in the uniformed and emergency services.

Working in Teams

Students will look at the importance of team working and take part in team building activities.

Further Education at college

These are usually National Certificate (NC) courses as a full-time college student.   They give students knowledge and skills training which will be certificated with the SQA.   They can lead on to HNC, HND and degree courses.
