Intermediate 2

This course provides an introduction to working in the retail industry.  Students gain knowledge and understanding by practical experiences in a real or simulated work place.

Employability skills are an important part of the course including the key areas of customer care and working with others.

Work experience is not part of the course, but visits to other work places or talks from visiting speakers can add value to the course.

Planning and Implementing an Event

Students will work in a team to plan, set up, hold and review an event. This will give the chance to learn key skills including problem solving and working with others.

Satisfying Customer Needs

Students will learn how to meet customer needs, how to be effective at selling and how to deal with complaints.  The practice of good communication skills and learning about consumer legislation are part of this unit.

Storing, Replenishing and Displaying Stock

Students will learn the importance of efficient stock control and display.  Health and safety aspects will be covered and working co-operatively with others will be developed.

Working in Retail

Students carry out practical tasks in a simulated or real situation.  Students will look at job roles and assess and review the skills that they need.   Practice of group and individual interviews will be given.

Employment with training

You may be able to get an employer to take you on with your Intermediate 1 or 2 certificate, with the offer of on the job training or  a modern apprenticeship.   You need to be quite clear what is on offer before accepting such a post.  In the construction trades you should use the CITB or SECTT pathways.

SVQ

SVQs are workplace based training opportunities assessed by your local college. For instance you might work in a play group or nursery and be assessed for SVQ level 2 or 3 in early education and childcare. Further Education at college

These are usually National Certificate (NC) courses as a full-time college student.   They give students knowledge and skills training which will be certificated with the SQA.   They can lead on to HNC, HND and degree courses.
