Access 3
This is an Access 3 course for those who wish to begin to find out about working in building work or in engineering. Most of the course work will be practical and be based in a workshop. Students will use tools to make things in wood and metal. They will learn which tools to use and how to use them properly and safely. The course may be at school or at college, but there will also be links to local firms, so that students can learn about the skills to be a good worker.
Students will be encouraged as on all Skills for Work courses to learn about the skills for workers. These skills will be about working in Building and Engineering.
Students will learn to use tools, wood and other material to make a piece of garden furniture, e.g. a bird nesting box or bird table.
Students will learn to use tools, steel and other materials to make something out of metal, e.g a cycle rack.
There are no optional units for this course
Students who do well in the Access 3 course may be able to go on to the Construction Skills course at Intermediate 1. College tutors and support staff will be able to advise on this.
Students who do well in the Access 3 course may be able to go on to the Engineering Skills course at Intermediate 1. College tutors and support staff will be able to advise on this.
Students who do well in the Access 3 course may be able to go on to the Rural Skills course at Intermediate 1. College tutors and support staff will be able to advise on this.
Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) tell you exactly what you have to do in a job to do it well. They are based on National Standards which are drawn up by people from industry, commerce and education. This means that if you have an SVQ you have a way of proving that you can do your job well, to national standards agreed by whatever industry or commercial sector you are in. SVQs send powerful messages to employers:
