Intermediate 2
This a very practical course, workshop based, which gives young persons or adults the basic skills and knowledge for training and employment in the engineering sector, or to proceed into further education courses. The course work and assessment are both more demanding than in the Intermediate 1 course. The course may be run in schools with suitable employer links, but is more likely to be undertaken by students at a college or training centre.
Assessment will be on-going through the course and will check that all practical activities are carried out safely and to a suitable standard. The employability skills will be assessed as the course goes on by student self review.
Students will develop their computer aided draughting (CAD) skills to design, construct and test a project item, producing a suitable report of this project. This will bring together the skills and experience from the other units in the course.
Students will select the correct tools and components and follow circuit diagrams to set up working low voltage circuits for certain purposes.
Students will learn to use the correct tools and procedures to test, disassemble, repair and re-assemble suitable items.
Students will learn to select and use the correct tools to make an object, using the basic engineering skills of cutting, shaping, drilling, tapping, forming and joining.
There are no optional units for this course
These are usually National Certificate (NC) courses as a full-time college student. They give students knowledge and skills training which will be certificated with the SQA. They can lead on to HNC, HND and degree courses.
You may be able to get an employer to take you on with your Intermediate 1 or 2 certificate, with the offer of on the job training or a modern apprenticeship. You need to be quite clear what is on offer before accepting such a post. In the construction trades you should use the CITB or SECTT pathways.
SVQs are workplace based training opportunities assessed by your local college. For instance you might work in a play group or nursery and be assessed for SVQ level 2 or 3 in early education and childcare.
