Inter School Hair and Beauty Competition
Around 80 high school students from Thurso, Wick, Alness, Invergordon and Golspie gathered recently in The North Highland College Thurso campus for a Skills for Work competition in hairdressing and cosmetology.
The students, all studying at Intermediate 1 or Intermediate 2 level, worked very hard throughout the whole day from their arrival at around 10am, until leaving the college at around 4pm.
Judged by local salon owner Rosemary Muir, this was the first in-house competition in this field held at North Highland College involving these different schools. The day proved a resounding success, helped along by the generous donation of prizes from the sponsor, Sally Salon Services. Cups and trophies presented were donated by The North Highland College. It provided the students taking part with invaluable experience in team building, allowing students from the five schools involved to mix and work together.
There were three competitions running:
Competition 1, called “Evening Look,” required Intermediate 1 hairdressing students to work on mannequin heads. These allow the students to gain basic hairdressing skills, but from the standard of the “heads” produced these basic skills are well established. The winner was Samantha Clack from Golspie High School, second was Sarah O’Hare from Thurso High School and the third was Faith Francis from Alness Academy.
Competition 2 involved the Cosmetology students who worked on “Day Look and Nail Art”. The winners were from Thurso High School: Louise Robertson was the model, with Amber Fletcher the beauty therapist. Runners up were Sarah McCafferty and Mhairi Ross from Alness and Invergordon Academies respectively, third place went to Fifi Greasley and Megan MacRae from Golspie High School. The nails were indeed works of art.
Competition 3 required a small team of students working together to create a “Total Look”. This competition was won by a team of three from Thurso: stylist Jenna Wade, model Laurajayne Levack and cosmetologist Natasha Morris. The team who came second were also from Thurso, with third place going to a team from Alness Academy.
